Rachel Levy: Capturing the Delicate Beauty of Decay

Rachel Levy, born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1955, pursued her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she graduated. After spending a decade in the USA, she returned to France in 1984.

As a freelance photographer, Levy has contributed to numerous magazines while conducting her own artistic research, primarily focusing on plants, flowers, and still life. Her unique approach involves photographing flowers that are nearly faded. This liminal state, an in-between moment, occurs just as the flower begins to decay—a point where gardeners or florists would typically discard it. However, for Levy, this moment captures an ongoing metamorphosis, exuding an evident delicacy.

Rachel Levy: Transforming Botanical Photography into Living Portraits

In a way, Rachel Levy’s work resembles a photographic herbarium, a meticulously curated collection of floral images. However, unlike traditional herbariums, her photographs transcend mere documentation, transforming into intimate portraits. Through a subtle process of removal, Levy humanizes the plants, often subtracting the leaves from the stems to create the impression that the plants are standing. This technique emphasizes the living essence within each plant, highlighting the inherent vitality and presence in her subjects.
